Hertenrits Reserve

The Hertenrits nature reserve was founded in 1972 and is the smallest reserve of Suriname. It is located in the district Nickerie and known for many cultural heritages that are present.

On Hertenrits we find remains of pre-Columbian life. The Hertenrits is located in the middle of a large complex field raised beds, which were joined by a number of canoe trails (creeks). Apart from agriculture the Hertenrits Indians themselves had to find their food from fishing, hunting and gathering mollusks in the water. Along the Corantijn River you can find many petroglyphs in various places which are difficult to date. Presumably, these drawings had religious ceremonial or mythological significance for the former inhabitants of this area.
